In the dynamic landscape of therapy, the choice between W2 employment and independent contracting has long been a subject of debate. While independent contractors often tout the freedoms of autonomy, W2 therapists find themselves enjoying a hidden advantage—one that transcends the allure of traditional benefits.

Tax Relief: A W2 Therapist's Saving Grace

One of the most compelling reasons W2 therapists flourish financially is their favorable tax situation. Unlike independent contractors, who grapple with self-employment taxes reaching up to 15% for Medicare and Social Security, coupled with a 22% federal tax rate and Indiana tax rate of 3% or Illinois tax rate of 4.95%, W2 therapists only bear the employee's share, cushioning them from a substantial financial burden. Moreover, many therapists have not been educated on how to file a 1099 tax return and end up with a large tax bill that can include mounting interest rates.

Financial Stability Amidst Uncertainty

Almost 39% of Americans today are not planning and contributing to a retirement plan and 55% are not saving enough to meet the needs of your retirement. When joining a group practice like NWI Clarity Clinic W2 therapists gain access to traditional benefits like 401(k) plans and health insurance. This provides clear financial planning for retirement and medical support. W2 therapists benefit from the stability and security of a regular paycheck. In a field where income can fluctuate, having a predictable source of income offers peace of mind and financial stability. This stability becomes even more crucial during unforeseen circumstances such as illness or economic downturns.

Self-Reliance and Resourcefulness

With administrative support, W2 therapists do not need to navigate the intricacies of backhouse issues within the billing and registration of their clients. Day to day, W2 therapists can focus on session planning and clinician skills. They are not placed in a position to discuss financial compensation which often leads to mixing ethics of providing care or seeking payment for their services. Furthermore, they have the resources and support of other professionals to lean on in times of need within the organization.

If you have been a therapist you often dread the subpoenas and worst-case scenario lawsuits. Many larger group practices have access to legal support through larger professional liability plans that have on-the-spot support lines and often have hired attorneys to address legal and ethical concerns when they arise. Contractors must obtain their own malpractice which often does not provide the same legal services as larger group policies.

Big Tech Overpromises

In today's day and age, technology companies have been moving into the mental health space. The community as a whole needs to begin to gain insight into large start-up companies hiring therapists as 1099 workers that over promise; because at the time they are backed by investment capital and underdeliver once that money runs out. In 2022, a large technology company providing therapy laid off over 3,000 employees due to instability in their projected earnings to their investors. We can use car-sharing apps as a learning lesson. They started with large capital investments and projections and then enlisted 1099 contractor drivers and as they needed to begin operating on their own revenue they continued to take more and more from their service fees. Furthermore, we have seen evidence of other technology companies over-evaluating their profitability to obtain 2nd and 3rd round seed investments. This money does run out and the start-up will need to show profit to these investors. If and when these companies become public, do we really want therapy services traded on the open market? Just as many have said in the past, "If it seems too good to be true it probably is." Lastly, you have a family and culture at a private group practice that cares about their employees and can physically sit down one one-on-one with each individual employee, unlike massive big tech companies.

Thriving in the W2 Realm

In the realm of therapy, the grass is undeniably greener on the W2 side for many practitioners. With traditional benefits like 401(k) plans, PTO, health insurance, administrative support, and legal backing, W2 therapists thrive financially thanks to favorable tax rates, stability, self-reliance, and flexibility. As the landscape of therapy continues to evolve, W2 therapists stand tall, leveraging their unique advantages to flourish both professionally and financially. NWI Clarity Clinic is happy to support therapists by offering W2 employment, if you are interested in joining our practice please contact hr@claritynwi.com.

Random Acts of Kindness: The Antidote to Holiday Depression?

For some of us, the chaos of the holidays and the stress of family and friend obligations can trigger depression or anxiety throughout the month. It’s sometimes hard to find balance in a season of excess and high expectations, leaving many of us feeling down and empty. Studies have found that finding activities and interests that offer purpose and meaning, as well as performing random acts of kindness, without the expectation of reciprocity or acknowledgement, can reduce depressive symptoms and improve overall well-being.
